Before you start considering the process of importing a car from abroad, you need to know the cost you will have to spend on customs duties at the Greek customs.

Attention!!!

After the new legislation on importing used cars, and specifically from July 2020, an additional environmental fee of up to €3,000 will be imposed.

In detail:

3.000€ for imported used cars with Euro 4 anti-pollution technology specifications. The same applies to the registration of commercial cars up to 3.5t
1.000€ for imported used cars with Euro 5 anti-pollution technology specifications.
For imported used vehicles with EURO 6 anti-pollution technology specifications there is no environmental fee
Registration fee for hybrid cars: there is a 75% reduction of import duties on vehicles up to 50 CO2 and 50% from 51 CO2 and above
Electric cars: Purely electric imported cars do not pay import duties.
Motor camper vans: The method of calculating registration duty is exactly the same as for private imported cars. And they have a 75% discount on all duties.

The import of used cars and trucks with Euro 3, Euro 2, Euro 1 specifications is also prohibited.

Relocation of cars: exemption from environmental tax and customs duties for imported vehicles, for the purpose of their repatriation and permanent establishment in Greece with the transfer of all their rights and the change from foreign to Greek plates.

Imported used cars over 30 years old, which are imported for the purpose of circulating only as historic cars, are exempted from the environmental tax.

When a vehicle is purchased from abroad, it is very important that the vehicle purchase invoice or private contract is issued correctly if the purchase is made by a private individual and not a professional for importing the vehicle. If it does not state the specific paragraph of the country of origin, you will have to pay VAT in Greece in addition to the customs costs.

The documents we will need for customs clearance and registration of an imported vehicle are:

The original purchase invoice or private agreement.
Traffic permit.
Valid MOT of the vehicle's country of origin abroad.
Formal declarations (authorizations) for the delegation of the tasks in Greece.

Vehicle transportation:

We offer services for the transport of the vehicle that you want to import to Greece from all over Europe and third countries.

Declaration of Vehicle's Arrival (D.V.A.)

When entering Greece, the entering vehicle must declare its arrival and destination 24 hours before crossing the Greek border. In case of failure to do so and there is a check there are penalties based on the Greek legislation on the import of used cars that have not declared arrival in Greece.

Customs clearance:

By the 15th day of the month following the date of arrival of the vehicle, the appropriate duty on the imported vehicle must be paid. In case of non-payment there are penalties according to the Greek legislation on importation of used cars.

MOT of imported vehicle:

After paying the cost of customs duties, the next calendar day the car can go through an MOT in Greece. We arrange the appointment for you and after agreement on how to transport the vehicle to the nearest vehicle inspection center, we undertake the issuance of all necessary documents.

Issue of Greek plates:

Afterwards, once we have all the documentation for registration duty (import duty receipts), we start the process of receiving Greek plates and issuing a Greek registration permit. You have the right to choose a single or even number for your imported vehicle or even to specifically choose the number you want to be issued, always subject to the availability of the Greek Ministry of Transport.
